On November 20, 2002, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
launched a campaign, to diagnose pre-diabetes and take steps
to prevent full-blown diabetes. About 16 million Americans have pre-diabetes,
but don't know
it. Pre-diabetes must be detected by screening starting with a simple
questionnaire. About 50% patients will have a high risk score and should have
a blood test.
The Diabetes Clinical Trials network of Columbia University, Cornell, and the
New York Presbyterian Hospital screens high-risk individuals at three locations
in upper
Manhattan on or near the west campus and at a location on the east campus.
If screening reveals pre-diabetes, network staff will provide information on diet and
physical activity and describe research programs aimed at diabetes prevention.
